Backwater boating in Poovar is one of Kerala’s quietest experiences. Here is what you pass on the water and how to plan the day.
Poovar is a coastal village at the southernmost tip of Thiruvananthapuram district. Kerala Tourism describes the confluence of Poovar Lake, the Neyyar River, the Arabian Sea and a golden sand beach as its signature sight. The beach can only be reached by boat, so it stays quiet compared with Kovalam.
A secluded stretch where the lake and the sea nearly touch. A short landing for photos and a walk.
Narrow, shaded waterways with roots in the water and plenty of birds.
The river mouth where fresh water meets the Arabian Sea.
Coastal life seen from the water, including nets and small boats.
Boat routes commonly pass the Mother Mary shrine, Elephant Rock and the AVM Canal, depending on the trip.
Kerala Tourism lists kingfishers, Brahminy kites, night herons and sea egrets among the birds seen around Poovar.
